Type Locality and Naming

It was named as the “Changliangzi Shale” by Inai Y. in 1934. The naming section is located in the vicinity of the Changliangzi Village southwest of the Tianshifu Town of Benxi City, Liaoning Province, with its reference section being situated in the Dabao area north of the Tianshifu Town.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed largely of conglomerate and sandstone, intercalated with shale and thin coal layers. Upper part consists mainly of grey-black shale, intercalated with sandstone, with a thickness of over 610 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies unconformably the Indosinian alkali granite or the Paleozoic Erathem.

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Dabao Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed extensively in the areas of Tianshifu Town and Maquanzi of Benxi City, and Saima-Aiyang Basin, with its outcrops being found as well as in the areas of Shangbali-Dianzi, Dahulutao and Biangou. Its thickness varies in a range from 153 m to 1321 m. At Dapianling it is of 470 m in thickness, and in the Gujiabaozi area within the Saima-Aiyang Basin the thickness of the formation reaches as great as 1321 m.

Fossils

It yields bivalves, Ostracods and abundant plant fossils. From among the bivalves there are found mainly the Pseudocardinia genus (about 7 species), as well as Tutuella altiformis, Ferganoconcha curta; of Ostracods there occur Darwinula longovata, D. opinabilis, D. changxinensis, D. taochuanensis, Timiriasevia sp., of fossil insects there are found: Euryblattuta flabelliformis, Palaeocupes firmus, Flexilicoleus thallosus. As for the plant fossils, they are found to occur largely in the Tianshifu Basin and the Saima-Aiyang Basin, in an amount of more than 20 genera and 30 species, belonging to an early assemblage of the Coniopteris-Phoenicopsis flora; with the spore-pollen fossils being represented by the Osmundacidites-Cyathidites-Chordasporites assemblage.

Schematic strat column in the previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Changliangzi Fm spanned Toarcian.

Depositional setting

The formation represents essentially intermontane-basin fluvial and lacustrine deposits, with a local deposition of it in a swamp environment.
